“Did you slap him?” Jane asked and poured me a cup of hot coffee.
“Yes, he wants me to be his lover.” I huddled on the sofa and drank the coffee slowly, enduring the waves of stomach cramps.
After sitting for a while, I turned around, rushed to the bathroom, and began vomiting.
Jane patted my back and sighed. “You know you have a weak stomach. Why did you still drink?”
I took a few breaths and wiped away the water left on my lips. My throat was burning.
“You have loved him for so many years. Is it really worth it?”
Hearing that, I looked up. Staring at myself in the mirror, I saw a girl with tear stains on her cheeks, looking all pale.
Jane complained from a distance, and I could barely hear her.
“If you hadn’t broken up with him before, he wouldn’t have made such great achievements today…”
I thought of Zachary’s fiancée again.
She was so full of life, just like the old me many years ago.
But fate gave me a hard punch later on. By the time I finally got back on my feet, everything had already changed.
After Jane finished working at Ribbon Residence, we walked back to the apartment we rented.
On the way, I got a call from Zachary’s friend.
“Adeline, if you are struggling with money, I can get you a job.”
I didn’t respond, waiting for him to continue.
“They are getting married next month. Edith is a good girl, and her family background is not bad. You…”
“I won’t bother him anymore. Don’t worry.”
He was silent for a while before explaining, “We just want Zachary to be happier.”
“Okay.”
After I hung up the phone, I noticed that Jane’s eyes turned red. She said, “They don’t know anything about the truth, but they all side with Zachary.”
“It’s okay,” I said calmly.
Since I had to stay here for some time, I found a job at a company close to home.

During the interview, the interviewee asked suspiciously, “You had depression before?”
“Yes, but I’ve recovered now. I can give you the doctor’s note if you want.”
In the past, several companies rejected me because of this reason. But luckily, I received an offer from the company that night.
I thought I would never meet Zachary again after the class reunion.
Unexpectedly, three days later, Zachary came to my company and became my superior. What was more, my workstation was moved to the entrance of Zachary’s office.
“I don’t want to sit near you,” I went to him and argued.
“Fine,” Zachary said coldly, not looking at me, “Send the resignation letter to HR then.”
I retorted. “You want to fire me just because I don’t want to change my seat?”
He stopped writing and finally looked up at me.
“I’m just offering you a choice. Do you seriously think I want to make a move on you?”
I was at a loss for words. Thinking of Jane’s argument with the landlord for the rent last night, I forced a smile. “No, I believe you’re an upright person. Of course, I believe you.”
Zachary nodded slightly. “Thank you. Close the door when you go out. Also, make sure you’re sitting with your back to me. I don’t want to see your face.”
All week, we barely spoke to each other.
A week later, our company held a party.
As I was a newbie, I was given a hard time and a lot of people pressured me to drink.
“Adeline, if you don’t drink, your salary will be deducted.”
“Don’t worry. We’ll drive you home if you’re drunk. We’re all women. What are you afraid of?”
The manager smiled and persuaded me to drink. Amidst the cheers of everyone, I drank the last glass of wine and fell unconscious on the table.
The next day, I woke up on a big bed. The sunlight was so bright that I couldn’t open my eyes.
I sat up, and the quilt slipped off, revealing the soft bathrobe wrapped around me. I was stunned for a moment before getting up and walking out of the bedroom.
Then I saw Zachary in the bright living room. He was reading the morning newspaper with his legs crossed, also wearing a bathrobe.
Seeing me coming out, he looked up and glanced at me. “You’re awake. Breakfast is on the table. Catch some sleep after eating if you’re still tired.”
A wave of terror swept through my body, and my face turned pale.
“We… Did, did we sleep together?” I stuttered.
Zachary tossed the newspaper to the side. He slightly pulled his collar and revealed a hickey on his neck, saying, “Unfortunately, you made a move on me last night.”
I was struck by his words. I tried hard to recall what happened last night, but I couldn’t remember a thing.
“That’s impossible!”
Before I knew it, Zachary had already placed a contract in front of me with my signature on it. It said that I would be his lover, and he would pay me 100,000 dollars a month.
“That can’t be my signature…”
“Really?” Zachary chuckled, “Are you sure?”
Facing his serious and confident gaze, I opened my mouth in shock but couldn’t utter a word.
He then took out a voice recorder.
“I accidentally recorded your monologue last night. Ms. Davis, do you want to hear it? You kept saying that you’ve never gotten over me and stuff. You even told me you wanted me.”
I trembled, and my heart sank. A huge sense of shame overwhelmed me. I couldn’t believe he would do this to me.
Lowering his gaze, Zachary said with contempt, “You’re coveting someone else’s fiancé. Adeline, how about we let the public listen to this recording?”
I clenched my hands tightly and snapped “Are you getting back at me?”
“Yes,” he replied calmly, “You made my life miserable before. Why should I make it easy for you? You have two choices. Fulfill the contract, or I’ll make the recording public.”
In the dead silence, I could even hear the sound of my heartbeat. I raised my head to face him and answered, “Then make it public.”
Under his cold gaze, I added indifferently, “Zachary, I won’t be your mistress.”
