When he smiled, I knew I shouldn’t have asked that question. Jacob took half of the french fry into his mouth and, using his free hand, he held my face and then brought his face close to mine, forcing me to eat it. I had no choice but to take a bite of the french fry.
It had been a very long time since I had eaten a french fry. Being the captain of the cheerleading squad was a really tough task; I had to stay thin and in shape all the time so that I couldn’t indulge in junk food.
As I noticed that Jacob’s mouth was only inches from mine, and his warm breath was gently grazing my chin, my face heated up, and I immediately pulled back.
“That was so romantic in some way,” Lisa murmured, gazing at us in awe.
“I’d eat fries too if they were given to me like that,” Vicky chimed in.
The smile on Jacob’s face was more of satisfaction than mockery, while I continued to blush more than a tomato. When the bell rang, my friends got up from their seats to dispose of the leftover food in the bins. I was about to do the same when Jacob held me by the waist and forced me to stay put. I looked at him with a furrowed brow.
“What are you doing?”
“Are you finished?” he asked, looking at my still full salad plate.
“Yes, I’ll buy something later,” I tried to get up again, but he didn’t allow it. “Jacob…”
“We’re not leaving until you finish your salad.”
“Excuse me?”
“You’re too thin. You don’t need to starve yourself just to fit into a stupid cheerleading team; your health should be
more important.”
Strangely, his words made my heart feel heavy. No one had ever said something like that to me before. Chris knew I was very thin, yet he never said anything about it; quite the opposite. Once he saw me with a milkshake and said I’d get fat.
“Whether I want to starve myself or not is my problem, don’t you think?” The expression on his face was quite serious.
“Open your mouth,” he exclaimed.
“Oh no, I’m not eating another fry,” Jacob smiled. “You won’t convince me this time.”
“Then do you plan to leave me like this?” I asked, moving the fry temptingly in his mouth.
I scoffed and almost rolled my eyes, but in the end, I decided to accept his proposal. After taking a bite of the french fry, a third person cleared their throat, and my face heated up.
“What a romantic scene,” Lexie muttered. “Although I’m surprised to see you eating junk food since, you know, if you exceed the cheerleading team’s weight limit, you could lose your captain position.”
“That’s nonsense; I can’t lose my captain position for gaining weight.”
“If you say so…”
Oh, come on. I hated Lexie, I hated her to impressive levels. How could she dare to speak to me with such cynicism? And how could Chris dare to stand in front of me when he had cheated on me with that traitor? I looked at Lexie with all the hatred I could muster, while she looked back at me with the same expression.
That’s when I realized how terribly quiet Jacob and Chris were. Chris stared at Jacob with disdain, while Jacob just smiled with superiority. He was the one enjoying this situation the most.
“Jacob,” Jacob suddenly exclaimed after a few seconds.
Both Chris and Lexie fell silent for a long while. I furrowed my brow and looked at Jacob a bit confused.
“Jacob?” I asked.
“Yes, that’s this guy’s name. Isn’t it?” I couldn’t help but laugh.
Christopher was the quarterback of the football team, as well as the guy who topped the popularity charts at school. How could Jacob not know his name?
“I’m Christopher, you idiot,” Chris informed him.
“Christopher, idiot,” Jacob muttered, tapping his temple. “Got it.”
That made me laugh even harder, which extended Jacob’s smile and increased Christopher’s anger.
“Do you think you’re very funny, moron?” Chris exclaimed, taking a challenging step forward.
“Well, she’s laughing,” Jacob responded, pointing to me with a nod of his head.
“I’m going to break your face.”
“Are you going to break my face?” Jacob taunted, getting up from his seat.
The tension between them was so high that even my fingers began to tremble. The few students who remained in the cafeteria were watching us curiously, expecting some kind of confrontation between the two. Finally, I decided to place a hand on Jacob’s chest to prevent any kind of confrontation between them.
“It’s late; we should go,” I murmured.
“True, we should go too,” Lexie exclaimed.
Apparently, she didn’t want to see them face off either. Well, you didn’t have to be a genius to know that if those two confronted each other, Jacob would definitely be the winner. He was taller and stronger, not to mention there were rumors that Jacob could take on a whole gang of guys and come out without a scratch.
When neither of them moved from their spot, I was forced to grab Jacob’s arm and pull him out of the cafeteria. Once alone, I turned to look at him.

“What are you doing?”
“What?” I grumbled.
“Do you really want to continue with this charade? Does that guy really mean that much to you?”
I swallowed hard and pressed my lips together.
“I… I don’t know.”
He approached me and placed his hands on my shoulders. “A guy like him doesn’t deserve a place in your heart, Megan.” I lowered my gaze to the floor.
“I know, but I can’t just tell my heart to stop loving him.” He sighed.
“Hey, about our deal…” he smiled. “How about an upfront payment for my services?”
“Do you need money?” I asked, and he nodded. “What for?” “Things.”
“Well, right now, I only have…” I took out a hundred-dollar bill from my bag.
Jacob took it and kissed me on the lips.
“You just paid for two more days of my services.”
“Where are you going?” I asked when he started to leave.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” he exclaimed without stopping, heading towards the exit.
“Jacob!” I called, but he ignored me and left the premises. I stood there for a long time, looking at the double doors where Jacob had gone. What was that? I had practically just had my money taken from me, money that was supposed to cover my expenses for the week.
Unconsciously, I touched my lips with my fingertips, remembering the warmth of his kisses. Realizing the direction my thoughts were taking, I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand and made a disgusted face.
I would make sure to confront him tomorrow about taking my money that way, and I would probably also slap him. However, something inside me told me I wouldn’t see Jacob for a while. And that turned out to be true.
Jacob didn’t show up for classes the next day, or the day after that.
