The rest of the day passed by quite slowly. The classes were boring, my classmates were annoying, and the rest of the world continued to look at me as if I were about to explode at any moment. Not to mention that new rumor about Jacob and me doing inappropriate things circulating around the school.
When lunchtime came, I bought a Waldorf salad bowl in the cafeteria and a glass of orange juice, then headed to the table where my three best friends were waiting for me. On the way, I saw Lexie at the center table (where the football team players usually sat), sitting on Christopher’s lap. I rolled my eyes. Obviously, they were only doing it to annoy me, as I used to sit on his lap just a few days ago. I had to bite the inside of my cheek to avoid making any expression that showed how jealous I was at that moment.
“Well?” exclaimed Lisa, leaning her elbows on the table.
“Well, what?” I said, putting a piece of apple in my mouth.
“Don’t play dumb, Megan,” Marisa grumbled, imitating Lisa’s posture. “Why didn’t you tell us anything about your secret relationship with Jacob Cross?”
“Yeah, why?” that was Vicky.
Great, now I had to lie to my friends too.
“Our relationship was a secret, girls. Nobody could find out.” “But we’re your friends! Why hide something so important from us?”
“Jacob made me promise not to tell anyone, not even you guys.”
“So, is it true?” Vicky asked, looking at me with her dark
brown eyes very seriously. “Did you have a relationship with Cross behind Chris’s back?”
“Yes,” I lied, and almost grimaced.
“Since when?”
“For six months.”
“Six months?” Marisa whined. “I don’t understand… Chris and you seemed so happy together…”
“Actually, Christopher and I weren’t doing so well. We had a lot of problems.”
“Do you know we’re talking about the same guy who slept with a teacher in the science lab, right?” Damn, I had forgotten about that rumor. Vicky shook her head disapprovingly. “I can’t believe you decided to cheat on Chris with that guy.”
“Chris is no angel either. Look at him getting involved with Lexie…” Lisa muttered.
“In theory, Megan cheated on Chris first, didn’t she?”
“Whose side are you on?” Lisa reproached Vicky. “Megan’s or Chris’s?”
“Megan’s, of course. It’s just that I can’t believe she could have cheated on him.”
“Well, I totally agree with that. It’s just that there’s still something that doesn’t add up,” Vicky murmured again, tucking a dark hair strand behind her ear. “How did your love for Jacob develop? I never saw you exchange a single word.”
Ugh, thank goodness I had prepared a story for that question.
“Do you remember the time Jacob smashed Chris’s car with a baseball bat?”
All three nodded. “Well, on that day, he didn’t realize I was still inside the car when he started breaking the windows. When he noticed, he apologized to me for scaring me.”
That part was true; I would never forget the huge scare I got that day.
“He apologized to you for scaring you, but not for wrecking Chris’s car?” Vicky asked.
“Jacob is a strange guy,” I shrugged and continued. “After that day, Jacob started looking for me. At first, he began sending me messages on Instagram, and…”
“Jacob has Instagram?” Lisa asked curiously. “Sure, he’s not a hermit.”
“Stop interrupting her, girls,” Marisa scolded.
“The point is, when he began looking for me, I decided not to pay much attention. You know, his reputation left a lot to be desired. But little by little, I became interested in him, and I don’t know. I realized Jacob isn’t like everyone thinks.” “Do you mean that everything rumored about Jacob is false?”
“Most of it, yes.”
“I see…” Well, at least it seemed like they had bought that story. “When did you realize you stopped feeling something for Chris?” Vicky asked.
“I think it was when Jacob took me to his apartment for the first time. We were watching a movie, started kissing, and then things happened.”
“Oh my God!” Lisa exclaimed, raising her voice.
“I felt like the happiest woman in the world,” I whispered after leaning a little over the table. “Jacob knows how to do things with his tongue that I didn’t even think were possible.”
“Oh my God!” Marisa exclaimed now.
“Jacob is so handsome, I love the tattoos on both his arms,” murmured Lisa.
“Those he got in prison?” Vicky asked.
“Yes.”
“Hey, but did the thing with the science teacher happen before or while you were with him?”
“That rumor is false. Jacob never hooked up with Professor Jennie.”
I really had no idea if it was true or false, but it was best to deny that rumor.
“Oh…” Take that, Vicky.
“So, you no longer feel anything for Chris?” Marisa asked, her green eyes looking very sad.

“I stopped feeling something for him when I met Jacob.” That was a big lie. My heart still beat for Chris.
“That’s good because it seems Christopher and Lexie are dating now,” Vicky exclaimed, with a small malicious smile on her face.
Chris and Lex were dating? Oh no, I couldn’t cry. Not after telling all these lies.
“Lexie can have Chris, I don’t care.”
“You should be careful, Megan,” Vicky continued, taking bites of her food. “If Lexie could take Christopher away from you, she could also take Jacob away from you.”
“As if that could happen,” I scoffed.
At that moment, Jacob appeared at the cafeteria entrance and winked at me when our eyes met. For some strange and unknown reason, I blushed. I had told him to meet me here for lunch as we needed to be seen together in public now that we were supposedly officially dating.
Jacob grabbed a tray of food from the counter and then began to approach us.
“Hey,” he exclaimed, giving me a kiss on the cheek, and then sat next to me. I couldn’t help but smile after seeing my friends’ reactions.
“I’m glad you’re here; I wanted to introduce you to my friends,” I cleared my throat. “Jacob, these are Vicky, Marisa, and Lisa. Girls, this is Jacob Cross.”
Jacob’s mouth curved into a half-smile, seductive smile.
“It’s a pleasure to finally meet my girl’s friends,” he said without more.
The three girls blushed and started to look nervously at each other. I couldn’t blame them; Jacob was incredibly handsome and at the same time incredibly intimidating. “Is it true that you robbed a store all by yourself?” Lisa blurted out, and Marisa gave her a hard hit.
“Shut your mouth!
Jacob’s smile darkened, making it clear that the question didn’t amuse him at all. He grabbed a french fry from his plate and looked at me, completely ignoring my friends. “Do you want me to feed you, sweetheart?”
The way he said ‘sweetheart’ made me smile.
I shook my head. “I can’t eat that.” I arched an eyebrow.
“Why?” “Carbohydrates.”
“Carbohydrates?”
“We’re cheerleaders, Jacob,” Vicky intervened, resting her elbows on the table. “We need to be in good shape to do all those stunts.”
“Mmm, what do you eat then?” he asked without much interest.
“This,” I said, pointing to my salad. Jacob frowned.
“Salad is horse food.”
“Salad is healthy,” I muttered, but he offered me a french fry again.
“Come on, have one.”
“No.”
“Do you want me to force you to eat it?” This time, I arched an eyebrow.
“How would you force me?” I asked, looking into his eyes.
